New York Giants 2006 Preview 0

Apr5
The New York Giants were 11-6 last season and made it to the playoffs as the NFC East champions. All year long the talk was about quarterback Eli Manning. Was he just like his more successful brother Payton? That question was answered in the playoffs when, just like his brother, Eli failed to show up. The Giants were absolutely destroyed in their lone playoff game. Eli was nowhere to be found. They are hoping to turn things around this season.

Quarterback

Eli Manning is starting to mature. Initially, he had real problems with road games. He’s starting to get over his infancy in the NFL and become a more stable quarterback. Manning still has issues with completing passes, but he’s expected to grow more this season. If he stays healthy and improves his play, he will be a good asset for the team. As quarterbacks go, he’s about middle of the pack.

Running Back

It’s no surprise that the backfield is the strength of this team. Last season Tiki Barber had a tremendous year. He rushed for 1,860 yards and gave Sean Alexander a run for his money. Blocking for him is Jim Finn. The Giants have one of the better backfields in the league. It’s not the best, but it’s darn close.

Receiving Core

Any receiving crew that has tight end Jeremy Shockey is bound to be at least decent. He’s a monster tight end that forces better coverage than a defensive end or linebacker. The Giants added speedster Sinorice Moss. He was drafted this year in the second round. The Giants are hoping that he adds a bit of flash and helps stretch the defense even more. The receiving core of the Giants is definitely above average. If Manning can start putting together the pieces, the Giants have an offense that can score and run time off the clock.

Defense & Special Teams

The defense of the Giants was so-so last season. They really didn’t show up in the playoffs at all. To help sure up the defense, the Giants have added LaVar Arrington, who played in Washington last season. They did lose their big nose tackle Kendrick Clancy. This key loss might kill them against the run. We will have to see how the replacement does. Still, the Giants figure to be right above average for defense. I don’t think they will crack the top 10 in defense, but they shouldn’t be too far below that overall. The Giants have a great special teams unit and that won’t change in 2006.

2006 Prediction

The Giants are going to have to battle for the NFC East this season. The Cowboys are expected to fight for it. The NFC East could be one of the better divisions in football. Look for them to make another trip to the playoffs. Hopefully Eli Manning will show up this time and Giants fans can enjoy a real playoff performance. The Giants have potentially a tough schedule. They could wind up 10-6.

Why New York City Is A Baseball Town 0

Feb3
It’s true that football, basketball and hockey have their fans, but the sports year begins in February and ends in October - preferably the end of October. And even during the other three and a half months, the hot stove league consumes the city’s consciousness, even eclipsing the Jets and Giants playoff runs.

This love for the game of baseball dates all the ways back to the 19th century as baseball was played throughout New York in its earliest forms. The birth of the National League in 1876 eventually brought the city the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants and when the American League set up shop in 1901, the New York Yankees soon set up shop.

Rooting for a baseball team in New York wasn’t about what team was better, it was an absolute birthright. People were born into a fan base and there was no switching side. As the Yankees established themselves, their fans came from the Bronx and also attracted the corporate visitor and tourists.

The Dodgers and Giants were different. Working class, blue collar fans in the first half of the 20th century tended to back one of the two National League teams. Giant fans were generally from Manhattan, while the city’s largest borough had their beloved Dodgers. Much like the class system of the early 19th century, which broke down people by nationality and religion, New Yorkers were identified with the teams they followed.

The best example of that came in 1951, where the Dodgers and Giants finished tied after the 154 game season. A three game playoff was ordered by the National League, which culminated with “The Shot Heard Around the World” by Giants’ Bobby Thompson. Fans fought with each other and until this day old Brooklyn Dodger fans still feel the pain.

After the Giant win, they proceeded to be swept by the Yankees, who had a young and talented Mickey Mantle in the outfield.

The Dodgers had their day in 1955, giving Brooklyn their only championship, but the days of the Boys of Summer ended two years later when the Bums and Giants upped and left for the West Coast.

With only one team in town, the fans of the Dodgers and Giants left behind did not back the Yankees, rather they followed their teams from afar or stopped watching all together. Only when the New York Mets were formed in 1962, did these spurned New Yorkers find a team.

Much like the their predecessors, the Amazins’ quickly established themselves as a people’s team. Although they were inept, fans flocked to the old Polo Grounds - and eventually Shea Stadium - to watch the Mets and root against the Dodgers and Giants when they came into town.

The Yankees, meanwhile, just kept winning. Champions in 1961 and 1962, they lost the Fall Classic the next two years. Then the bottom fell out. They finished close to the bottom or last for the rest of the decade, as the team aged and the mighty farm system went barren.

That gave the Amazing Mets a chance to take the city. And in 1969 they won the World Series against insurmountable odds. Led by young pitchers like Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, the Miracle Mets won their first the Series 4-1 over the Baltimore Orioles.

They stayed in contention for the next seven years, but never got back to the top.

The Yankees resurged after George Steinbrenner bought the team and through free agency built the 1977 and 1978 champs. But the Boss’s hands on approach eventually cost those Bombers due to too many bad moves.

As the Yankees went down, the Mets came back and in 1986 won the Series again, beating the Boston Red Sox in seven games. Much like the team of a generation before, these Mets were competitive until 1991, but never won the big game.

But like before, when the Mets faded, the Yankees came to the forefront. This time winning four crowns in five years (1996, 1998-2000). Unlike past teams, these Bombers were built from within, while cheery-picking the other talent through free agency and trades. Led by future Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, the Bombers remain a force in the American League.

The Mets enjoyed a resurgence in 1999 under controversial manager Bobby Valentine and catcher Mike Piazza. They even went to the Series in 2000, only to lose to the cross town Yankees. Then, after five years of mediocrity, the Mets came back in 2006 behind young stars David Wright and Jose Reyes and were one strike away from the World Series, losing to the eventual champion St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

What makes baseball in New York unique these days is the rivalry between the Mets and Yankees. The teams didn’t play each other in non-exhibition games until 1997 and the Subway Series is the highlight of every season. Both Shea and Yankee Stadiums get a mixed but behaved crowd when the two teams play each other. As both the Met and Yankee fans root for their teams, you can hear chants for both clubs back and forth for all nine innings.

And that’s unlike any other sport in the city. Hockey games tend to have more violent outbursts in the stands, while games between the Knicks and Nets and Jets vs. Giants matches could be played anywhere, since the intensity just isn’t there in comparison.

And that’s why New York, first and foremost, is a baseball town.

A New York Giants Feud 0

Dec30
During halftime of an NFL pre-season game between the New York Giants and the Baltimore Ravens, Tiki Barber heavily criticized Eli Manning’s leadership skills. The former Giant stated, “He didn’t feel like his voice was going to be strong enough and it showed. Sometimes it was almost comical the way that he would say things.” Eli Manning did not take to those words kindly and retaliated by saying, “I guess I could have questioned his leadership skills last year with calling out the coach and having articles about him retiring in the middle of the season. As a quarterback you’re reading that your running back has lost the heart to play the game and it’s about the 10th week, I can see that a little bit at times.” The current NFL analyst on NBC responded to that by commenting on his Sirius satellite radio show, “I have never, ever, ever not left 100% of myself on the football field.” Eli’s comments regarding Tiki Barber make perfect sense. Following a playoff loss in the 2005 NFL season, Tiki mentioned that Coughlin was “out coached” by Carolina Panthers coach John Fox. In 2006, Barber was frustrated due to coach Coughlin’s ineptitude at calling plays. This feud between Eli Manning and Tiki Barber is certainly not a Shaquille O’Neal vs Kobe Bryant situation, and it is not a Donovan McNabb vs. Terrell Owens situation. I doubt it will ever escalate to that level, but eyebrows have to be raised when you hear Manning say that. Eli is usually not the most demonstrative NFL player in the league. He is calm and reserved, so it was astonishing for him to make an audacious comment like that.

Hot Tips for Obtaining New York Giants Tickets 0

Dec28
The New York Giants, officially known as the New York Football Giants - so as not to confuse it with the professional baseball team by the same name – was instrumental in bringing professional football to New York City. Those days, circa 1925, was the time when professional football was played in places, such as Dayton, Rochester, and Columbus. It was the time when only professional baseball, boxing, and college football was played.

That particular afternoon in October 1925, the New York Giants brought professional football to New York City, and though they lost their inaugural game at home, 14-0 to the Frankford Yellow Jackets, professional football had come to stay at New York.

The New York Giants, as a professional football team, plays in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football league (NFL). Founded by a businessman, a bookie, and a promoter all rolled into one – Tim Mara – the New York Giants were one of the very first teams of the National Football League (NFL). Of the five professional football teams to join the NFL that year in 1925, the Giants are the only surviving team.

The Giants have a number of nicknames. They are variously known as Big Blue Wrecking Crew, Big Blue, G-Men, The Jints, The New York Football Giants, and Jersey Giants.

The Homes Of The Giants

The New York Giants, today, are based at the Giants Stadium, in the massive Meadowlands Sports Complex in suburban East Rutherford, New Jersey.

From the time they first started playing, the Giants had four different bases, before they finally settled down in their own Stadium. To begin with, they shared the Polo Grounds with their baseball namesake – the New York Baseball Giants. Before the start of the 1956 season, they moved into the Yankee Stadium. With the Yankee Stadium closing down for massive renovations, the Giants, after playing the first two games of the 1973 season, shifted base temporarily to the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut for the rest of the season, as well as the 1974 season. After the 1974 season, they shifted to their fourth home – the Shea Stadium and stayed there until the opening of their own Giants Stadium in 1976.

The New York Giants have six NFL titles under their belt. Four are the pre-merger NFL Championships, which they won in 1927, 1934, 1938, and in 1956. The other two are the Super Bowls they won in 1986 and in 1990.

The Tickets

As is with most of the sports tickets in New York City, the New York Giants tickets are also not easy to come by. If you are unable to procure them from the venues itself, you can arrange to have your New York Giants tickets bought from the licensed ticket brokers of New York City.

The licensed brokers have the sources at their command to arrange the New York Giants tickets for the games you wish to attend. You will have to pay a little over the face value of the tickets to help cover the costs incurred by the brokers.

New York Giant Tunes Up His Run With Orthotics 0

Dec7
urress was searching for an answer to his chronic foot and ankle pain. He makes his living running routes and catching balls for the Super Bowl champions New York Giants with a nagging ankle injury, flat feet and a new pair of orthotics. Burress is breaking in his orthotics at practice and expects to be ready for the season opener this week.

In May, Burress was advised to use orthotics to help improve the function of his feet. He said it took time to get fitted, and he did not start using them until recently. He admits that he is sore after running but is getting much better. Functional orthotics are improving his gait so he will not be as prone to injury as he has been in the past.

55 million Americans experience one or more foot problems every year! Failure to seek medical advice early can cause many to develop more complicated foot conditions that can be severe and difficult to treat.

One of the most common foot problems is heel pain. It is estimated that 15% of the adult population complains of heel pain, which includes one million runners who experience heel pain (plantar fasciitis) every year. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons has stated that heel pain has reached epidemic proportions in weekend athletes. This common condition is typically ignored, especially by athletes. People tend to seek treatment only after the problem becomes severe and disabling or when they just can’t run. When foot health concerns are ignored, simple conditions can develop into more serious problems affecting the ankles, knees, hips or the back. A simple functional orthotic is the answer for many people experiencing this kind of foot pain.

Orthotics are devices which fit into the shoe to aid the foot and allow it to function more optimally. Relatively rigid in shoe braces that are designed to control motion and correct the function of the foot are “Functional orthotics”. Individuals with flatfeet, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, knee, hip and back problems and certain foot deformities, may benefit from functional orthotics.

Will orthotics help my foot problems? The goal of the functional orthotic is to control the abnormal motion in the foot, improve foot function, decrease the pain in the foot, ankle, knee, hip or back and to add support. The orthotic should make standing, walking, or running more comfortable. The orthotic must be rigid to help control the motion in the foot and add support. If the orthotic is soft, the weight of the body would collapse the device and it would no longer function.

Functional orthotics are a successful treatment for many problems affecting the lower extremity. In a recent article in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 75% of patients surveyed had good to excellent results from functional orthotics. This includes 17% who felt the orthotics “cured” their pain. Less than 10% had no relief. A painful heel was the most commonly treated condition in the study. Over 20% of patients surveyed were treated for a painful heel and 20% were treated for a painful arch. Fourteen percent of the individuals were using orthotics for flatfeet. Other conditions treated with orthotics were knee, hip and back pain, foot arthritis, bunions and high arches. Tendonitis was not specifically evaluated.

Individuals with plantar fasciitis (heel and arch pain) who also have flatfeet usually respond best to orthotics. People with high arches may require orthotics as well, but they do not respond as well. Orthotics can help slow the progression of bunions and hammertoes, but they will not prevent this process. Orthotics may help with some pain at a bunion, but they will not “cure” the bunion. When the motion in the foot is contributing to the problem, orthotics are generally recommended.

Podiatrists are the most common prescribers of orthotics, but pedorthotists, orthotists, physical therapists and sometimes chiropractors will also provide orthotics. Remember that the device is only as good as the doctor taking the mold and writing the prescription. Make sure that your practitioner is trained in foot biomechanics and experienced in orthotic therapy.

Orthotics are indicated in the treatment of the majority of foot pain. When utilized for the correct indications, orthotics are highly successful in controlling foot pain and can add pep to your step! Orthotics have helped Plaxico Burress conquer his chronic injuries and they may help you!
